Will Consumers Pay $120 For Windows 7?
The cost to upgrade from Windows XP or Vista is $120 for Windows 7 Home Premium, the version most home users will use. Yes, there was a pre-release sale, and I expect to see Win 7 on sale in the future. You can get a copy for as low as $30 if you have an .edu email address and meet the requirements.
People have come to expect that software is free, and you can find some really good software free or a very low price. However, operating systems, the underlying software on the computer, just doesn’t fall into that category. Sure, there are many flavors of Linux which are free to use, but for the general home user, I just don’t see it happening. They will need access to tech support on many occasions, beginning with the installation. Home users should stick with Microsoft or Apple. And remember, when buying a new PC, you will get Win 7 installed by the manufacturer, at a reasonable cost.
So, will you pay $120 for an upgrade? Sound off in the comments!
